One of the first questions couples ask me when planning a proposal is, “What time should I do it?” While lighting is certainly important, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. As a local St. Augustine proposal photographer, I always consider both the quality of light and the number of people who will be around before recommending a time.
Early Morning: The Best Choice for Privacy
If you’re hoping for an intimate proposal with very few people watching, early morning is hard to beat.
Downtown St. Augustine is one of Florida’s most popular destinations, and by mid-morning the streets, courtyards, and waterfront around St. George Street and the Bridge of Lions begin filling with visitors. Scheduling your proposal shortly after sunrise gives you the best chance of a quiet, peaceful moment together before the crowds arrive.
The soft morning light is also incredibly flattering for portraits, creating natural, even tones that look timeless in photographs.
Sunset: Beautiful Light, More Activity
Sunset is another favorite time for proposals, and for good reason. The warm golden light along the Matanzas Bay waterfront creates a romantic atmosphere that photographs beautifully.
The tradeoff is that sunset is one of the busiest times of day in St. Augustine. Locals are out for evening walks, tourists are exploring the historic district, and restaurants begin filling for dinner. While I can often work around the crowds, it’s worth knowing your proposal may have more people nearby than an early morning session would.
Sometimes the Best Light Isn’t in Direct Sun
Many people assume the perfect proposal has to happen in wide-open golden light, but one of the things I love most about proposal photography in St. Augustine is that the historic district offers so many overlooked spots.
The city’s narrow brick streets, ivy-covered walls, tucked-away courtyards near the Castillo de San Marcos, and oak-lined paths under Spanish moss create beautiful, soft light throughout the day. These locations naturally diffuse harsh sunlight, making it possible to create stunning images even outside of sunrise or sunset.
Some of my favorite proposal locations aren’t the obvious landmarks — they’re the quiet spots most visitors walk right past.
Local Knowledge Makes All the Difference
After photographing proposals throughout St. Augustine for years, I’ve learned how the city changes throughout the day. I know which spots stay quiet, which areas get busy, how the light moves through the historic district, and where we can pivot if a location suddenly fills up.
I’ve shown up to a planned location only to find it packed with a wedding party or a tour group — and within minutes, redirected the couple to a nearby courtyard that ended up being even more beautiful than the original plan. That kind of adjustment only happens with someone who knows the city inside and out.
