The Things We Photograph Throughout the Wedding Day

Photographing a wedding day is more than just snapping pictures—it’s about telling a story. I am Phavy of Phavy Photography, a St. Augustine Wedding Photographer. We recently photographed a beautiful wedding at The Treasury on the Plaza in St. Augustine, and we’d love to give you an inside look at what we actually photograph throughout the day. This will help you understand what to expect as a bride and how we ensure no special moment goes unnoticed. From the smallest details to the grandest moments, we’re there to capture it all.

Things to Consider

Wedding days could be hectic if not properly planned. Ensure you are allowing more than enough time to do anything and everything. Ask any wedding photographer, planner, or other wedding vendor that have a timeline — does anything really go as planned? We always hope it does, but often time just roll with the punches!

Here is a look into what we would normally photograph throughout the time — if timing permits!

1. Getting Ready on the Wedding Day

The “getting ready” part of the big day sets the tone for everything that follows. We capture the excitement and anticipation as you prepare to walk down the aisle, documenting intimate moments like your hair and makeup, the bridal party’s energy, and those final touches on your dress. For the groom, we also focus on the special moments with his groomsmen and personal details like cufflinks or the tie. These candid and detailed shots create a beautiful beginning to your wedding story, highlighting the emotions and behind-the-scenes moments you’ll cherish.

2. First Look (Optional)

The first look is an optional, yet incredibly special moment shared between the bride and groom before the ceremony. It’s an intimate time where you can see each other for the first time, away from the crowd, allowing genuine reactions and emotions to unfold. We capture every detail of this magical moment—your smiles, tears, and the excitement as you take in the sight of each other. These photos become a beautiful reflection of your connection, providing some of the most heartfelt images of the day. If you opt for a first look, it’s a wonderful way to ease pre-ceremony nerves and add another layer to your wedding story.

3. The Ceremony

Ceremony Photos: Capturing the Heart of Your Wedding Day
The ceremony is the most important part of your wedding, where you officially become partners for life. We capture every key moment—from the walk down the aisle to the exchange of vows, rings, and your first kiss as newlyweds. But it’s not just about the big moments; we also focus on the emotional reactions of your family and friends, preserving the atmosphere and joy in the room. Our goal is to document the raw emotions and meaningful moments that make your ceremony unforgettable.

Detail Shots of the Ceremony: The Little Things Matter
Beyond the major events, we also capture the intricate details that make your ceremony unique. We photograph the ceremony space, from the floral arrangements and seating setup to the altar and decorations. We’ll also focus on elements like your wedding programs, rings, and any personal touches that tell the story of your day. These detail shots help create a complete narrative of your wedding and highlight the care you’ve put into every aspect of your ceremony.

4. Family & Wedding Party Photos

Family and wedding party formal photos are an important part of your wedding. These group portraits capture the people who mean the most to you, ensuring you have timeless images of your loved ones by your side. We photograph both posed and candid shots of your family and bridal party, making sure everyone looks their best while also keeping the process smooth and efficient. These photos reflect the support and joy surrounding your day, creating a lasting record of the special bonds shared with family and friends.

I didn’t include any family formals in this blog however here is a helpful tip: If you want your family members to be there, let them know ahead of time. And if you have a shot list, provide it to your family so they know what to expect. Ths decreases the chances of missing family members and prolonging the process.

5. Couple Portraits

Bride and groom portraits are some of the most cherished photos from your wedding. This is your time to step away from the crowd and focus on each other, allowing us to capture your connection in a more personal and intimate setting. We use this moment to create romantic, timeless portraits that reflect your unique love story, incorporating beautiful lighting, natural poses, and stunning backdrops. Whether it’s a candid moment of laughter or a tender embrace, these photos are designed to showcase the essence of your relationship and will be treasured for years to come.

6. The Reception

Room Flip & Reception Detail Photos: The Transformation
If your venue transitions from ceremony to reception, we capture the impressive room flip that brings your vision to life. We photograph the transformation, showcasing the new setup for dining and dancing. We also focus on the intricate details of your reception space, from centerpieces and table settings to lighting, décor, and any personal touches you’ve added. These detail shots help tell the full story of your day. It highlights the effort you’ve put into creating a beautiful, inviting space for your guests.

Reception Photos: Capturing the Celebration
The reception is where the celebration truly begins, and we’re there to document every joyful moment. From your grand entrance to the first dance, heartfelt toasts, and the cutting of the cake, we capture all the key events. But it’s also about the fun candid moments—guests dancing, laughing, and enjoying themselves. Our goal is to preserve the energy and excitement of your reception, ensuring you can relive the joy of the celebration long after the day has passed.

7. Candid Moments & Details Throughout the Day

Some of the most meaningful photos from your wedding day come from the candid moments—the unscripted, real interactions that happen naturally. We capture everything from the laughter shared with your bridesmaids to the emotional tears of your parents and the playful moments on the dance floor. These candid shots give your wedding gallery authenticity, revealing the raw emotions and joy of the day.

In addition to these moments, we focus on the details that add personality to your wedding. From close-ups of your bouquet, shoes, and rings to the custom elements in your décor, we make sure to document everything that helps tell the full story of your wedding day. These small but significant details often get overlooked in the moment, but they’ll serve as lasting reminders of the thought and care you put into creating your perfect day.
